I know that this is a very simple photo. No fancy graphics or overblown colour. It's just what it is. It's what you would find if you were to come upon an open field with a single tree, and a partly cloudy sky on a sunny day.
It's the sort of place where you lay down your blanket, put your hands up behind your head, and daydream as you watch the clouds float by. It's just that Simple. This is dedicated to my friend Michael who loves tree silhouettes and who deserves a simple tree to lie under and watch the clouds pass over head. I have decided to make a series of this shot. Noble gesture dedicating it to Michael. Bless his cotton socks. I wish him the best in this dark time for him.
This image works because it is so simple, the colours compliment each other. The green sits snugly beneath the cloudy sky blue. The tree is perhaps the star of this show as a result of some great composition. Simplicity allows the brain to work more. So many folks could relate to an image like this because it would mean a million different things to a million different people. I had no idea Michael loved tree forms, I should've known he was a bloody hippy tree hugger. It's that long hair of his. Nicely captured Handra. -- To Truly Look is to See - To Truly Hear is to Listen Thank you Fladam!
I've been watching and waiting to find a tree that stands alone like this for a long time. I always think of scenes like this as being so remote and calming. Some day I'll find an even better one I hope! I should go back some time when the leaves are open and see how it is with a green tree. -- I wish I was a Glow Worm; Glow Worms are never Glum 'cause how can you be gloomy When the Sun shines out your bum? |

Critiques
I recently lost my mother to lung cancer and have been feeling very depressed for the entire past week (she died Wednesday - June 3rd) and sorely needed some affirmation that the future isn't as bleak as I have come to see it.
As Sandie mentioned, I absolutely LOVE trees in silhouette and cloud-filled skies. I'm also rebellious enough that I love artwork that dispels common myths or adages, and this one dispels the notion that the "apple doesn't fall far from the tree."
The symbol of a lone tree has always been close to my heart as it shows the tendency of lone individuals to survive even the most adverse situations. And although I LOVE the shade and coolness of a vast forest, a lone tree also exemplifies my belief that "less is more." When we have but one specimen to view, we become more aware of its unique nature and that's especially true when we see the delicate branches of a lone tree silhouetted against a blue sky.
I've also always loved clouds and the natural Rorschach test they provide those who take the time to enjoy their beauty. The storm clouds that seem to be gathering on the edges of the photo are a subtle reminder that rough times may be ahead and we should always appreciate the beauty we have before us in the present.
In all, this is deceptively complex photograph full of hidden meanings and expressions to the astute viewer. It shows an honest appreciation for the subtle wonders of nature held by a very aware photographer, and the sincere concern of a wonderful friend who knew her work would cherished at such a difficult time.
