Mother Earth is Pissed.............

Journal Entry: Sun May 1, 2011, 12:53 PM
wow!  so.... the snow was all gone.... that's right....... I said WAS!!

We had a hell of a blizzard yesterday!  There is over a foot of snow on the ground and the wind was so bad, the drifts are huge!  We could hardly get our doors open this morning!

Not only is this a pain in the ass - but it's also bad news because we are already flooding.  Our water levels are almost at record highs - and this amount of precipitation (it rained for a solid day before turning to snow) is only going to add to the problem.  Not to mention that our river was supposed to crest by the 28th -but now they have pushed that back about 2 weeks because a dam that comes before us is bursting at the seams, causing them to have to  open the flood gates.  Things aren't looking too good for the situation....... *sigh*

So, I'm not sure if you've heard about the tornadoes this week that took place in Alabama.  I read on one news site that throughout the day, there were over 300 tornadoes on the ground.  That's total craziness!  SO much damage incurred, SO many people killed and hurt.  Please send up a thought for the people affected by this terrible tragedy.  They could use all the help they can get :(

I think Mother Earth is pissed at us.  In a big way.....

So who watched the big wedding?  I will admit that I did - but I PVR'd it and watched it later - that way I could FF through all the boring parts.  I thought it was rather lovely.  Very tasteful, and it was so nice to see the British people out there in droves waving their flags in patriotism and happiness!  The would really could use more good news these days.  I know that many people were bombarded with it and are sick and tired of it all, and that there are some who believe the Royal Family is a waste of time and money - but you know - the outpouring of excitement I saw on the tv screen as the people lined up and waited for so many long hours just to be there makes me believe that the whole event served to uplift and unify a country.  And that is always a good thing.

I will say though - the people of the UK sure do know how to wear hats.  Some of them ridiculously gaudy (hello Princess Beatrice!!)  but interesting none the less!  I just know that if I were invited to the wedding of the decade and I ended up sitting behind some of these hats I'd be pissed off!  ;)

Here's to hoping that all of you are well, my friends, and that you are safe, warm, your belly full, and your loved ones are near you!

:( Alas, all of this is predicted by global warming ... which of course isn't supposed to exist, or at least not be caused by human activity!

Mother nature isn't pissed, she just doesn't CARE.

And it is only going to get worse ... :O

Saw it on the news, those Tornadoes certainly don`t mess about,I hope Dennis is ok,didn`t realise he might be in the heart of it :fear:
And Jesus, can`t believe you had Snow! :o Ironic for the UK and given your situation, but we could actually do with a good old fashioned downpour now :raincloud: as we have just had the hottest and driest April on record :sun:

I watched some of the wedding on TV,you`re right it is/was good to see the 1,000`s of people enjoying it and smiling through the whole thing there :eager:

Yeah, I logged in to FB after work and I have a couple of friends in that area and they were sending out messages for people to get to a safe place, etc. I watched the news all night and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Scary stuff. it's unbelievable, really.

Yeah - after I put our snow boots and coats away last week! ;) but you know, it's warm enough that it's melting pretty quick - more an inconvenience than anything - but it sure is adding a lot of moisture to an already over flowing system. Funny how one area can be so wet, and one so dry. Too bad there isn't a weather exchange system! Our river crest has been moved back two weeks now, so it will be interesting to see just how high it gets. Some of our sand bag areas are starting to leak - there is a LOT of water pressure behind them - so hopefully they will hold up - other wise there are a LOT of homes and businesses in very big trouble. We aren't even allowed out on the dikes anymore - too dangerous - so I don't know what I'll be able to get for pics from this point on.

When you didn't show up I figured maybe you went to the wedding to hang out on the streets for the big event! It would have been crazy there!

Did you hear the news that Bin Laden has been killed? It's good news on the surface, but I also worry about who is stepping into his place. It's like a monster - you cut one head off, and 2 more grow back. I'm not sure it's cause for celebration at this point :(

This is a week old, sorry Handie
Hope the situation is getting better there now, doesn`t sound like it by one thing I read by you elsewhere I think
We had a very welcome Thunderstorm today and some rain over the past few days, read in the paper last week we could be in for the driest Summer since `76 :sun: That`ll suck,it`ll be hose pipe bans and low reservoirs and rivers, you`re right a weather exchange system would be handy for us both right now :highfive:

As for Bin Laden,I think you`re bang on and there is already another just as bent on evil and mass destruction idiot in his place

Hey Jonny - Unfortunately we are in very bad shape right now. This morning they announced manditory evacuation notices for parts of the city near the river and have declared a local state of emergency. Other communities are getting military help now, and we are still holding our own, but it's getting dicey now. Several main arteries and highways in the area are now closed as well :( I feel so bad for the people who live in the affected areas and I wish I could help - they are calling for people to help with sand bagging but I'm afraid that I'm not strong enough to do that for very long. I'm still thinking about whether I should go out or not. It's raining today and we are expecting a lot of rain over the next 2 days - so the sand bags will likely be even heavier than if they were dry.

If you check out my FB page you can see aerial photos of the flooding - you may have to scroll down a little bit as I've been posting regular updates.

I'm glad to hear you finally got some rain - and hopefully the summer won't be as dry as forecast. You certainly don't need to deal with the risk of forest fires!!

Yeah, we're ok - we don't live near the river. For the water to get to us it would have to be pretty freaking awesome flooding. It's sad though, to think of people losing their homes. They are saying that we are nearing cresting though - so that will be a relief to many - it will then just come down to the integrity of the dikes and sand bagging holding up.

There are lot of businesses that have had to close as well - feel bad for them also - if it was us we'd be in trouble. I'm very glad our business isn't near there either. Good business owners and employees are going to suffer this year :(

Our Prime Minister is supposed to be in town this afternoon - coming to check it out I suppose - get his picture taken throwing a sand bag or something. But at least we are getting that attention which will make rebuilding easier when the time comes. I can't even fathom the amount of money being spent on protecting the city.

Tomorrow they are planning on blowing a hole in one of the dikes upstream from us to relieve the pressure on other towns by allowing more farm land to flood. (it won't help us any) the thing is - about 150 homes in a small community are going to get flooded because of this. How unfortunate for them. It really sucks.... I hope that at the very least they are well compensated for it.
